One of the lovely things about staying at Caban Tawel is having so much of Pembrokeshire within easy reach. From beautiful beaches and historic castles to picturesque harbours, coastal walks and charming little towns, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Whether you fancy discovering somewhere new, enjoying a walk by the sea or simply finding a lovely spot to sit and take in the views, here are a few places to inspire your stay, all within a scenic drive from Caban Tawel.
Castles, history and heritage
There are centuries of history and heritage to discover in Pembrokeshire. To the north of the county, explore pretty Cardigan with its castle and independent shops, and nearby St Dogmaels Abbey. Or visit Cenarth to learn about traditional coracle fishing and, in season, watch salmon leaping at the falls.
Fishguard Fort offers lovely views over the harbour, while the Last Invasion Tapestry tells the story of the French invasion of 1797. At Castell Henllys, you can discover what life was like for our Iron Age ancestors.
If castles, battlements and portcullises are more your thing, head south to explore Pembroke, Manorbier or Carew Castle. Carew is also home to the historic tidal mill, with a scenic walk linking the castle and mill alongside the picturesque tidal millpond.
Gardens
If wandering through colourful gardens is your idea of holiday enjoyment, a visit to Picton Castle is a must. Discover flower-filled borders, sweeping lawns, formal walled garden, kitchen garden and picturesque woodland walks.
Dyffryn Fernant, Colby Woodland Garden, Upton Castle Gardens and Stackpole Walled Garden are also well worth a visit. Dogs are welcome at all of these gardens except Dyffryn Fernant, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a garden stroll with your four-legged companion.
Harbours, marinas and seaside towns
Enjoy a stroll around Milford Haven Marina, where colourful buildings, waterfront cafés and restaurants overlook the boats. It’s a lovely place to stop for a coffee, enjoy a meal or simply watch the world go by beside the water.
With its colourful harbour, charming streets and beautiful sandy beaches, Tenby makes a wonderful day out (although it can get busy!). Browse the independent shops, enjoy an ice cream by the sea or take a walk along the coast and admire the views.
The charming little city of St Davids, with its independent shops, cafés and magnificent cathedral, is also well worth a visit. On the way, stop off in pretty Solva, with its picturesque harbour and colourful boats. And for a delicious treat on the way home, we can highly recommend a visit to Pointz Castle for freshly made ice cream!
Beautiful beaches and coastal scenery
Pembrokeshire’s spectacular coastline stretches for 186 miles, and many of our guests enjoy exploring sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path during their stay. In fact, some return time and time again until they’ve walked the whole route!
With inland footpaths and seasonal coastal bus services, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy scenic walks, whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a more challenging hike.
Our wonderful coastline also offers an amazing variety of beaches, from tucked-away coves such as Caerfai and Nolton Haven to hidden gems like Druidston and the dramatic cliffs and sands of Marloes. Then there’s the vast expanse of Newgale, where you can dig your toes into the sand, paddle in the sea and enjoy the fresh sea air.
Dog-friendly beaches
Pembrokeshire is a wonderful place to explore with your dog, and most of our beaches welcome dogs all year round.
Some of the more popular beaches have seasonal restrictions between 1 May and 30 September, including parts of Newgale and Tenby South. Dogs are excluded from Tenby North Beach and Whitesands (near St. Davids) during this period, but there are still plenty of beautiful stretches of coastline to enjoy together. For up-to-date information, see the Visit Pembrokeshire guide to dog-friendly beaches.
